Boeing visits Melbourne School of Engineering as part of Industry Series
Earlier this month, Boeing representatives Andrew Glynn (Program Manager, Phantom Works
International) and Michael Skeen (Senior Systems Engineer) were joined at an MSE Industry Series
event by over 50 engineering and IT students eager to hear about their experience in the profession.
Launched this year, the Industry Series provides MSE students with the opportunity to attend
extracurricular presentations and networking opportunities delivered by industry professionals.
Having both graduated from the University of Melbourne after studying mechanical engineering,
Glynn and Skeen illustrated how diverse the career opportunities are for engineers and the many
pathways that graduates may consider.
Glynn spoke of his 17 years with the organisation which included career highlights such as
relocating to Seattle in the United States to work in an international team developing the Boeing
787 Dreamliner. Skeen detailed his career in the defence industry and how this led to him working
within Boeing Defence Australia (BDA), a wholly-owned Boeing subsidiary.
Both Glynn and Skeen encouraged students to consider a career in the Defence industry, noting
that with huge growth occurring in the industry it is an opportune time for graduates to enter —
particularly those graduating with STEM qualifications.
Attendees also learnt of Boeing’s Graduate Program, which consists of rotations throughout the
business and provides graduates with a mentor from within the organisation. Glynn described
how graduates within the program are part of the core team from day one and are encouraged to
contribute to solving problems alongside everyone else.
Skeen spoke to the importance of students possessing professional skills and that “people skills”
like teamwork, communication and presentation skills will help graduates rise to the top and stand
out during the application process, as well as throughout their career.
The pair spoke passionately about their time with the organisation, citing the company’s values
and culture, as well as their exposure to interesting and challenging work, as being a key motivator
for them throughout their careers at Boeing.
