Presented by Prof Patrick Kwan BMedSci (Hons), MB, BChir (Cambridge), PhD (Glasgow), FRACP FAHMS
Professor of Neurology, Monash University; Director, Epilepsy Unit, Alfred Health

Professor Patrick Kwan is a medical specialist in neurology and an international authority in epileptology. Professor Kwan’s research portfolio encompasses both applied basic science and clinical aspects to improve treatment outcomes, including translating research findings into the practice of personalised medicine for epilepsy.

Through collaboration with medical AI scientists Professor Kwan’s team have recently trained and validated a world-first machine learning model to predict an individual’s response to specific drugs used as the first treatment for new onset epilepsy. The model integrates the patient’s medical history and investigation results routinely collected in clinical practice. Simulation suggests that if patients took the drugs recommended by our model, 20% more might have become seizure-free than under usual care. The model is now ready to be rigorously tested in a randomised controlled trial throughout Australia.
