Electrical engineering strikes a chord

Dr Gavin Buskes is Assistant Dean (Teaching and Learning) at the Melbourne School of Engineering. For Gavin, there's a lot of crossover between electrical engineering and his first passion: music.

"One of the projects that I had (my) students do a few years back now was to combine my love of music with electrical engineering," Gavin said.

"(Jimibot is) essentially a bunch of robot actuators that mimic playing a guitar like a human."

Gavin is equally passionate about fostering an engaged and collaborative student cohort at the Melbourne School of Engineering, and has a particular focus on students' transition from high school to their first year of university.

"We have a fantastic campus here that we want students to come to. We want them to feel part of a group and feel as though they belong here," he said.

Gavin’s work fostering a positive culture for first-year students was recognised earlier this year when he was awarded the GEM Scott Teaching Fellowship and the Edward Brown Award for Teaching Excellence.
