Victorian State Government
The Mallee Regional Innovation Centre acknowledges the generous support from the Victorian State Government. The University of Melbourne was awarded $1.7 million in funding through Regional Development Victoria, with the support of the Mallee Regional Partnership to establish the Centre.
Partner organisations
The Mallee Regional Innovation Centre is a joint venture between the University of Melbourne, LaTrobe University and SuniTAFE.
The two universities are committed to working together to draw on their collective technical expertise and SuniTAFE, as Australia’s No. 1 training provider, plays a leading role in developing and rolling out training courses to ensure that the outcomes of the Research and Development are translated into effective capability on the ground.
Collaborating organisations
Dried Fruits Australia (DFA) is the national industry body, representing the growers, processors and marketers of dried grapes. The not-for-profit organisation, formerly known as the Australian Dried Fruits Association, was established in 1907 to protect the interests of growers. Our vision is for a sustainable and innovative horticultural industry that consistently supplies high quality dried grapes to consumers.
The Hyperspectral and Thermal Remote Sensing Laboratory (HyperSens) is established jointly between the School of Agriculture and Food (SAF), Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences (FVAS), and the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT), Department of Infrastructure Engineering. HyperSens focuses on quantitative methods for Remote Sensing, with main interests on vegetation stress detection, physiological condition and Precision Agriculture.
The Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is an independent, corporate Commonwealth entity that reports to the Commonwealth Minister responsible for water. The MDBA has offices in Adelaide, Albury-Wodonga, Canberra, Goondiwindi, Griffith, Mildura, Murray Bridge and Toowoomba. Our purpose is to achieve a healthy working Basin through the integrated management of water resources for the long-term benefit of the Australian community.
The Murray–Darling Basin is a large, complex, diverse and dynamic system that is home to 2.6 million people, including more than 40 Aboriginal Nations. Its water resources are relied upon and enjoyed by Basin communities, as well as many others who live outside the Basin.
One of Australia’s most productive agricultural regions, the Basin produces more than one-third of the nation’s food and $24 billion in agriculture on average each year. The Basin is constantly changing in response to the influences of people, climate and the way water is used for production, communities and the environment.
Murray Darling Basin Authority
Connecting communities, industry and researchers to manage climate and water risks in the Murray-Darling Basin. The proposed ONE Basin CRC is a focused collaboration developing policy, technical and financial solutions to support and reduce exposure to climate, water and environmental threats in the Murray-Darling Basin.
RAMPS (Robotics, Automation, Mechatronics, Prototyping and Sensing Laboratory) is a multidisciplinary engineering Research and Development team based out of La Trobe University. RAMPS engineers design and fabricate functional prototypes in areas related to Robotics, Automation, Mechatronic Design, Machine Vision and Sensor Systems. We take a Systems Engineering approach to generate a detailed requirements analysis to ensure that we deliver what you actually need and want. We draw vast design experience and an in-house advanced mechanical prototyping facility to turn your electro-mechanical ideas into reality.
Rural Financial Counselling Service Victoria – North West, is a free financial counselling service for farmers and small farm businesses in North West Victoria. Our Rural Financial Counsellors can work with you to provide information and develop options, while you make the decisions.
Rural Financial Counsellors are available to meet with you on your farm, at your business, or elsewhere if required. The service is free and independent. Confidentiality is assured.

In practice, the Smart Farm is influencing the way horticultural farms are managed through its growth in and use on farm of automated technologies, robotics, driverless tractors, precision seeding and planting, adapted harvester, real time monitoring and analysis and drones for imaging, planting and crop spraying.
Through this cutting-edge technology and combined with best practice at its SMART Farm, SuniTAFE will be the leading training provider in SMART horticulture farming and develop the people of today into the workforce of tomorrow.

Through the newly created McPherson Family and Invergowrie Foundation Women in STEM PhD Scholarships, talented female engineers at the University of Melbourne are being empowered to develop critical career skills and networks by undertaking an industry placement in the Mallee through the support of the Mallee Regional Innovation Centre.
