Professional Skills Series

The Professional Skills Series is a packaged program of events offered each semester exclusively to Engineering and IT students. The aim of the Professional Skills Series is to help you develop self awareness and an understanding of the skills and attributes desired by graduate employers. You are given the opportunity to evaluate and prepare for a range of career options in Engineering and IT, including sourcing internship opportunities. Contemporary questions and topics will be presented for guest speakers, alumni and current students to discuss.

Opportunities from this series will also be publicised on the Engineering & IT Calendar and via the Eng & IT Express newsletter.

Written Communication 1 + 2

Engineering Learning Unit

These workshops are designed to assist students with writing reports. Workshop 1 addresses Audience awareness, Formality in writing and Self-assessing reports. Workshop 2 focuses on Writing concisely and Critical reading. These workshops are targeted at master-level coursework students.

Format:
There are two 2-hour workshops that are repeated across the semester.

Note: These workshops are available to all FEIT students but also form part of the Skills Towards Employment Program (STEP) and the Engineering Practice Hurdle (EPH).

Workshop 2 focuses on Delivery: Introductions, scripts, notes, body language, speaking, anxiety and managing questions. These workshops are targeted at master-level coursework students.

There are two 2-hour workshops that are repeated across the semester.

Academic English Tutorials for graduate coursework students

Academic Skills and the Engineering Learning Unit

The Academic English Tutorial program is free, runs for 9 weeks and is offered during your first or second semester at university.

The tutorial series runs during semester and is scheduled to fit between your other classes. The tutorials are designed to help you to develop and apply the academic and English language skills you need to participate in class and succeed in your assessment tasks at the University of Melbourne.

Format:
The 9-week tutorial program runs one session per week from week 2 to week 11 (with a 2-week break in the middle of semester). Each tutorial runs for 90 minutes.

Writing circle: Scholarly writing skills for Masters coursework students

The Writing Circle initiative is designed to assist you in improving your writing skills, gain deeper insights on how to give and receive constructive feedback, and introduce you to rubrics, and find out how to use rubrics in your assignments.

The Writing Circle is comprised of three modules that have been crafted in consideration of writing research literature and focus on ways to enhance and practice:

Module 1: Report writing skills – identify and practice clear writing techniques using examples
Module 2: Peer-feedback – identify effective feedback, editing versus proofreading and practice giving feedback
Module 3: Rubrics – recognize different rubrics and how they are used in assessments, offer feedback using a rubric

Format:
This is a self-paced online course.
