Arrival and commencement checklist

Congratulations on receiving your offer for a graduate research degree in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology! We are looking forward to welcoming you to the University of Melbourne

There are several steps to prepare you for your arrival on campus and with the aim of getting you started in a seamless manner please refer to the checklist below:

Note: any questions up to and including enrolment, please email FEIT-GR-Admissions@unimelb.edu.au, but any stage after this, please email FEIT-GR-Candidates@unimelb.edu.au

1. Meet the conditions of your offer

Domestic and International students

  • Refer to your offer letter for further details on the conditions that need to be met prior to receiving an unconditional offer. You will also need to have been successfully awarded a Melbourne Research Scholarship (or an alternative stipend) to undertake your research degree with the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT).

2. Accepting your offer

International students

  • Complete the 'International Student Acceptance and Payment Agreement online to receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Get Started: accept your offer and enrol. Note, these steps do not complete your enrolment.

3. Deferring your offer

Domestic and International students

4. Nominate a commencement date

Domestic students

  • Establish a commencement date with your supervisor
  • Go to steps 6-10.

International students

  • Nominate a commencement date (as agreed with your supervisor and considering visa processing periods )in the enrolment period started in your offer (eg. 2022 July - December; commencement date = 20 August 2022).
  • The commencement date needs to be within a month of your CoE date. if required, your can change your CoE date and apply for a new CoE: renewing your student visa

5. Apply for a student visa

International students

  • A student visa is the preferred visa since you are expected to have a visa that is for the duration of your course, in this case 4 years. Some applicants experience lengthy application processing delays (3 -9 months) due to their country of origin; unfortunately, we do not have any control over this process. If you need to extend your CoE due to visa waiting times, please request it here: Renewing your student visa.
  • If you have questions about your OSHC, please go to: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
  • If you cannot enrol in the enrolment period of your offer, and you have received your visa, you have the option to defer: Get Started : Accept your offer and enrol : University of Melbourne (unimelb.edu.au)
  • If you are onshore, and you have applied for a new student visa, you can enrol whilst you are on a bridging visa.

6. Finance considerations

Domestic and International students

  • Many of our GRs receive the Melbourne Research Scholarship or an alternative stipend. Scholarships can include relocation allowances to assist with travel from overseas or interstate.
  • Scholarships and relocation allowances are paid with the first scholarship payment and are not received by recipients until 2-3 weeks after arrival in Melbourne and commencement. This is due to the alignment of payments with University pay cycles. Therefore, please budget for your arrival and initial accommodation – given that you will not receive your scholarship on arrival.

7. Travel

Domestic and International students

  • Consider contacting your supervisor or your department administrator regarding arranging an onboarding buddy (someone who has travelled to Australia recently)
  • Consider letting us know of any significant delays to arriving in Melbourne. You can let your supervisor know but you should also copy in your department administrators:

8. Once you are onshore or in Melbourne and ready to commence your degree

Domestic and International students

  • Contact FEIT-GR-Admissions@unimelb.edu.au to let us know that you have arrived. We can then inform you on any updates and relevant instructions. Typically, you will need to provide us with your commencement date since changes may have occurred since the initial arrangement was made.
  • Once enrolled on your commencement date, we will send you a welcome notification email regarding next steps on arrival on campus, and student ID cards etc.
  • Establish an Australian bank account to receive your scholarship payments:
    • You can enter your bank account details via: https://my.unimelb.edu.au > Student admin > Financial support > View and update my bank account details.
  • Attend the FEIT GR Induction appointment. We are now providing face-to-face inductions. Please see the induction appointment dates below*.
  • Attend department induction/on-boarding appointment:
    • Report directly (or by email, zoom) to your department administrator.
    • Your department administrator will also arrange to induct you into your department.
    • The department induction is quite different from the FEIT GR Induction.
