From Spark Engineering to the Future Engineer Prize

Joseph Alkarra discovered engineering through a high school camp. Now he’s been awarded a prize to support his journey to becoming an engineer.

The Future Engineer Prize is made possible by a group of FEIT alumni who decided to support students through their masters degree. This group of friends met while studying and have maintained that connection to each other and are supporting the next generation of engineers. Joseph Alkarra discovered engineering through the Spark Engineering Camp in Melbourne and is now on his way to becoming an internationally accredited engineer.

The scholarship has made me hopeful about the future and being able to meet the alumni sponsors has helped me feel so connected to the faculty. I’m inspired to become an engineer. This group is still connected from their days at uni and they’re all doing amazing things in the industry. The Future Engineer Prize has highlighted how strong the community is here and it’s helped me feel attached to the uni and this community.”

Balancing studies and supporting his family, the Future Engineer Prize gave Joseph financial support but it adds more value than just the money. Fostering that interest and innovation in engineering relies on the sense of community where we can share skills and inspire others.

I knew there were all sorts of scholarships available, so when it came to my masters, I applied for all that I qualified for and received the Future Engineer Prize, where the benefits extended beyond just the financial side, but provided an emotional connection to the uni and the community that I get to share with the sponsors.”
