Singapore and Vietnam short program in Entrepreneurship (elective credit)!

ASEAN Summer @ NTU serves to provide a global learning experience for talented students with good academic standing and leadership potential to participate and learn along NTU and ASEAN students in a short-term multi-location (Singapore and Hanoi) program.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a prestigious national research university in Singapore with globally acknowledged strengths in science and engineering. The College of Engineering is it's largest subdivision, and ranks among the top 5 schools of engineering and technology by QS World Rankings.

The Program

A comprehensive summer program has been specially curated to build and enhance key skillsets that are important for students to be Future Ready. Participants will take part in two components of this program.

  • Several weeks in Singapore taking an Entrepreneur course, attending workshops and lectures covering design/systems thinking and intercultural competencies, and then apply the learnings to solve an SDG issue within a multicultural and multidisciplinary team
  • A week in Hanoi, Vietnam, to gain a deeper understanding and sensitivity to diverse cultures and perspectives. While in Vietnam students will continue their learning on entrepreneurship to build industry-relevant knowledge that will support expanding their business solution (from component 1) into the Vietnamese market as well as gaining an overview of the economic and social landscape of Vietnam and regional networks.

Participants will be automatically registered for the course “ET5131 Venturing into Entrepreneurship” upon admission into the program.

For this program students will earn 3 NTU credits, which (along with the other practical and experiential components of this program) have been approved for credit for the following FEIT disciplines:

  • Biomedical Engineering – 12.5 points approved elective credit
  • Chemical Engineering – 12.5 points elective credit
  • Civil Engineering – 12.5 points elective credit
  • Information Systems - 12.5 points elective credit
  • Information Technology - 12.5 points elective credit
  • Dates

    This program runs from 26 June to 27 July 2024.

    • First Segment – Immersion in Singapore: 26 June to 15 July
    • Second Segment – Immersion in Hanoi, Vietnam: 15 July – 27 July.

    Travel between components will be coordinated by NTU as part of the program.

  • Eligibility

    Applicants should:

    • Be enrolled in an FEIT-owned graduate degree (such as Master of Information Technology, Master of Information Systems, or any of the Master of Engineering degrees)
    • Be in good academic standing (ie not recently failed any subjects)
    • Ensure prior to enrolment that this credit as approved will fit onto your study plan. Eg, if you have 12.5 points of elective credit granted for this program, you MUST have a spare 12.5 elective slot available in your study plan.
    • Optional, but recommended Hold a leadership position such as with a university student club or be involved in community service.
  • Costs

    The ASEAN Summer Program is open to students as an exchange program. As such, the Singapore portion of the fees is covered, but students will still need to contribute around SGD3020 (About $3,445 Australian dollars) for the Vietnam and travel components. A final pricing will be available closer to the commencement date.

    Attendees will also need to cover also will need to cover their own flights, transport to/from airports to campus, some incidental food and other personal costs.

  • Funding

    Participants are eligible for FEIT exchange funding of $1300 comprising $800 in support of a short-term program as well as $500 in support of a targeted partnership, as NTU and Melbourne are mutual AOTULE members.

    You may also wish to look into university funding support such as the Melbourne Mobility Awards, as you are permitted to receive both.

  • Accommodation

    On-campus accommodation is guaranteed for all successful applicants. You do not need to apply for this separately. Participants will be allocated randomly to twin-sharing rooms in an NTU undergraduate Hall of Residence. Accommodation at student hostels in Thailand will be arranged by Mahidol University.

  • Arrival

    Singapore

    Airport pickup is not available, but you can find directions to NTU here.

    Thailand

    Airport pickup service will be offered to all participants. More information about flight bookings and airport reception will be shared with participants during a program briefing prior to commencement of the program.

  • NTU Student Insurance Schemes

    Singapore

    Participants are covered under the NTU student insurance schemes while they are in Singapore, namely Group Personal Accident Insurance (GPAI), Group Hospitalisation & Surgical Insurance (GHSI) and Medical scheme, even if students have already bought similar insurance in their home country.

    GHSI covers students for COVID-19 treatment and hospitalization in a government restructured hospital. For details on the GHSI coverage, please visit this link.

    Thailand

    NTU notes that their insurance covers only the Singapore components of the trip, and advises that students should seek their own insurance for the Thailand component. FEIT advises that students are eligible for free cover under the UniMelb Travel Insurance as listed below.

  • UniMelb Travel Insurance

    Travel insurance cover is provided for enrolled University of Melbourne students while undertaking authorized university travel. Find out more here.

How to proceed

You must meet the eligibility criteria for short-term programs to be approved by the University of Melbourne. You must also be approved by NTU to participate in this program. It is your responsibility to ensure you meet any eligibility conditions set out by the host institution; this may include any academic requirement, language proficiency test, or previous study.  Please refer to the application documents required above.

  1. Ensure you are recommended for credit for this program by agreeing to the credit listed above for your discipline, or by contacting your discipline advisor for a personal approval. You must get this in writing (such as email), as Stop 1 will need this to grant credit following your overseas program.

  2. Apply via the UniMelb application link above.  Do NOT apply directly to NTU.   Successful applicants will be nominated by UniMelb and advised to complete the NTU application form.

  3. Once you are approved by the University of Melbourne and once your NTU application has been accepted, submit your NTU acceptance letter through to ask.unimelb and request to be enrolled in your placeholder subject.

Information for nominated applicants

If you are selected by the University of Melbourne, please be aware of the following.

  • Application Documents

    Nominated students will be directed to apply to NTU via their online application form. In order to complete this application you will need to have the following ready to go:

    • Scanned copy of the latest official transcript (signed by the Registrar and includes home university's seal) in English, reflecting all courses taken in PDF format (<600kb).
    • Colour passport-size photo in JPEG format (<60kb; 400(W) x 514(H) pixels). The photo must be clear and sharp and taken within the last 3 months.
    • Scanned copy of passport information page in JPEG format (<200kb). Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the commencement of the second segment of the program in Thailand.
    • If English is not your first language, evidence of reasonable English proficiency (international students will have met this, as the requirements for entry into FEIT courses are higher)
    • Up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (CV) in PDF format (<600kb)
    • Optional A 200-word letter written by the applicant on why he/she deserves to be part of the ASEAN Summer @NTU program. (List the leadership roles that you are currently undertaking, including involvement in any form of social or community service. In the application portal, look for the tab “Attachments”, then upload your letter under “Other Documents”.)
    • Optional A Recommendation Letter from a faculty of the home institution and an outline of the nominee’s accomplishments. (Upload your letter under “Other Documents”.)

    The mailing of original documents (hard copies) is NOT required.

  • Post-Program

    After the ASEAN Summer @ NTU Program the participants must be prepared to:

    • Share their learning experiences through seminars, blogs, university websites, presentations and their home university and country and
    • Complete online surveys regarding their progress and development
