The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology is delighted to support our students in embracing overseas opportunities, including short-term coursework programs.

This page shines a spotlight on particular opportunities that are coming up. Students are encouraged to review the central brochure pages for all upcoming exchange opportunities, as there may be programs available relevant to your cohort that have not been promoted for the wider FEIT cohort.

Short-term coursework programs run during the summer (November - February) or winter (July) break periods and fit within the University of Melbourne holiday periods.

Technical University of Berlin Winter School

Berlin, Germany

5 - 29 January, 2027

The Technical University of Berlin Winter Program offers the chance to spend a month in Germany while earning credit towards your masters degree. The TU Berlin Winter School invites students and working professionals from around the world to participate in a unique winter experience at the TU Berlin.

This program offers reasonably advanced STEM subjects that are uncommon in short term programs. Choose one of four interesting intensive subjects to complete while exploring Berlin with your classmates in your spare time.

Korea University International Winter Campus

Seoul, South Korea

22 December 2026 - 18 January 2027

Study at one of the most prestigious and popular universities in Korea this Summer break! Korea University International Winter Campus offers a variety of courses in various disicplines, ranging from Korean studies to Business to Science, which is facilitied by a multitude of cultural activities. The program attracts many students from across the globe, giving you the opportunity to interact, study and thrive in a very multicultural setting.

Sungkyunkwan University Winter International Student Experience (WISE)

Seoul, South Korea

11 January - 4 February 2027

The SKKU Winter International Student Experience (WISE) is a four-week in-person academic program designed to provide global students with a meaningful and immersive study-abroad experience during the winter season. Participants take credit-bearing courses taught in English across diverse fields such as Business & Economics, Social Sciences & Humanities, Computer & Data Science, and Korean Studies & Korean Languages, all held to the same academic standards as regular semesters at SKKU.

In addition to academics, students participate in hands-on cultural immersion activities such as ski trips, cooking workshops, and K-pop experiences.

An optional online Intensive Korean Language Program is also offered prior to the in-person session, allowing students to build basic Korean language skills at their own pace (NOTE: Students cannot receive credit for this online intensive).

Fee-paying places are available.

Research Programs Currently Open for Application:

Kyoto University KU-STAR Program

Kyoto, Japan

7 January - 18 February 2027

KU-STAR Program, Kyoto University Short-Term Academic Research Program, aims to open the door to research opportunities for undergraduate and post graduate students to undertake a period of research with them over the Australian summer holiday break. KU-STAR Program participants benefit from conducting their respective research projects under top faculty at Kyoto University; learning about the laboratory ecosystem and life&culture in Japan; gaining exposure to industry; and participating in a poster presentation.

You will need to have space in your UniMelb study plan to enrol into a relevant research subject at the University of Melbourne (eg. BMEN90041, MECH90043, CHEN90026, COMP90055) in order to participate in and receive credit for this program. Your proposed project at KU-STAR will need to meet the approval of the UniMelb subject coordinator.

Preassessed options:

For Biomedical Engineering students, the following projects are recommended: 50, 51, 68, 73, 75
For CIS students, the following projects are recommended: 65, 67, 68, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74 and 75.
If your discipline is not listed, please feel welcome to discuss with your department to determine what can be approved, and what subject would bear credit towards your degree.

KAIST

Daejeon, South Korea

Dates: Summer holiday break - individual program dates to be decided with your supervisor

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has a well-established Visiting Student Researcher Program through which it welcomes overseas students into short-term research placements.

FEIT students may choose to attend a 3-month research program over the Australian Summer holiday period. Students will join an existing project at KAIST and undertake 8 weeks of research experience, with the intention that this also contribute academic credit towards their degree at the University of Melbourne. You will need to be proactive in researching what projects are happening at KAIST, and in approaching the appropriate academic at KAIST to request supervision.

UC Louvain

Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium

Dates: Summer holiday break - individual program dates to be decided with your supervisor.

An exciting opportunity for engineering students to undertake research in Europe over the Australian summer break. You will join an existing lab at UCLouvain, Belgium, and undertake research from late November - end February (with a short break for the Christmas/New Year holiday period). Following your research experience, you will return to Melbourne and complete some assessment components so that this experience will contribute academic credit towards your degree.

You will need to have space in your UniMelb study plan to enrol into a relevant research subject at the University of Melbourne (eg. BMEN90041, ELEN90083, MECH90043, CHEN90026, COMP90055) in order to participate in and receive credit for this program. Your proposed project at KU-STAR will need to meet the approval of the UniMelb subject coordinator.

POSTECH

Pohang, South Korea

Dates: Summer holiday break - individual program dates to be decided with your supervisor

POSTECH accepts students for short-term research visits, which you might like to consider over the UniMelb summer holiday period. You will need to be proactive in researching what projects are happening at POSTECH, and in approaching the appropriate academic at POSTECH to request supervision.

POSTECH does not assess you as part of this program, so you will need to have space in your UniMelb study plan to enrol into a relevant research subject at the University of Melbourne (eg. BMEN90041, ELEN90083, MECH90043, CHEN90026, COMP90055) in order to participate in and receive credit for this program. Your proposed project at POSTECH will need to meet the approval of the UniMelb subject coordinator.

Harvard Summer School

Harvard University, Massachussets, USA 13 July - 30 July 2026

Harvard Summer School offers more than 400 courses for adult and college students, in more than 60 different subject areas, including engineering, IT and IS disciplines. As there are so many subjects available, we have not pre-assesed these. Please apply and complete an Overseas Study Planner, which will be assessed by your department to confirm whether your proposed subject can contribute credit towards your degree.

Peking University Globex Program

Peking University, Beijing, China 6 July to 24 July 2026

Peking University (PKU) is a comprehensive research university in Beijing, and their well-established Globex Program offers a range of subjects to suit many STEM fields.

FEIT academic Professor Andrew Ooi will be teaching into this program, and able to offer some support if you encounter any issues while attending the program.

Funding: If attending on an exchange place, FEIT scholarship funding is available. Please note that this funding is not available for fee-paying places.

University of Zurich International Summer School

University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland 5 July - 24 July 2026

The University of Zurich (UZH) is Switzerland’s largest university and offers the widest range of study programs in the country. During the UZH International Summer School students combine academic studies with exciting and highly interactive in-person sessions and a comprehensive social program.

Funding: If attending on an exchange place, FEIT scholarship funding is available. Please note that this funding is not available for fee-paying places.
