Commerce/Engineering pathway
The main benefit I found was that doing a Commerce undergraduate beforehand allowed me to really expand my options. Within engineering, whilst there are technical roles there are also managerial roles.

I chose to do structural engineering because with so many infrastructure projects currently happening in Melbourne, it’s something that does really excite me. To have the opportunity to directly be involved in that is something I was really looking forward to.
Bachelor of Commerce
Master of Engineering (Structural)
This pathway is ideal if you’re looking to combine business skills like management, finance or accounting with technical knowledge in engineering to lead into a broad range of career options in engineering, business or consultancy.
How to study Engineering through the Bachelor of Commerce
As a Bachelor of Commerce student, you’ll need to successfully complete four prerequisite subjects in order to meet the entry requirements for the three-year Master of Engineering. These subjects are:
- 2 × specified maths subjects, 12.5 points each
- 2 × first year level 1 science (relevant to your chosen engineering stream eg, Electrical, Mechanical etc), 12.5 points each

Note: for Biomedical Engineering you can replace the two science prerequisites with MAST20029 Engineering Mathematics.
Option 1: Graduate Degree Package (GDP)
3 + 3 years = 6 year pathway
Enrol in the Commerce/Engineering GDP and use your breadth to fulfil the four engineering pre-requisites and continue to the Master of Engineering or Master of Engineering (with Business).
Bachelor of Commerce students commencing from 2019 onwards who are recipients of a Melbourne Chancellor's Scholarship and students with a Commerce/Engineering GDP will be allowed to complete four specific Level 1 breadth subjects to meet the pathway requirements. You will need to submit an Enrolment Assistance Form to enrol in the fourth breadth subject.
Option 2: Standard BCom/MEng pathway
3 + 3 years = 6 year pathway
Students who commenced prior to 2023 can enrol in the Bachelor of Commerce and use your breadth to fulfil the first three engineering pre-requisites.
As students cannot complete four first-year subjects as breadth, you will need to take one as an additional subject via single subject study (Community Access Program). This will be free of charge if you achieve a course weighted average of 65% and have completed the other three prerequisite subjects.
This arrangement applies to Bachelor of Commerce students who commenced their course from 2017 onwards. The tuition fees will be covered by Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) for one attempt of the subject only.
You will need to apply for the Master of Engineering course in your final semester of study.
Prerequisites
The specific prerequisites required will vary depending on your chosen engineering specialisation, but many overlap. You can keep your options open for multiple engineering specialisations using the subject groupings below:
- Physics-based engineering majors: civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical, mechatronics, digital infrastructure
- Chemistry-based engineering majors: biomedical, chemical, civil, environmental, digital infrastructure
- Biology-based engineering majors: biomedical, civil, environmental, digital infrastructure
- Computing science/programming-based engineering majors: civil, digital infrastructure, software
- Geosciences: environmental
- Geography: environmental, digital infrastructure
Note: ENGR10005 and ENGR10006 are not counted as science prerequisites.

Note: students majoring in Actuarial Studies will usually complete MAST10008 Accelerated Maths 1 and MAST10009 Accelerated Maths 2 which will meet the maths prerequisites required for all streams of the Master of Engineering. If MAST10008 and MAST10009 are completed, students do NOT need to complete MAST10006 Calculus 2 and MAST10007 Linear Algebra.
Calculus 1
Bachelor of Commerce students who also need to take Calculus 1 before Calculus 2 and Linear Algebra will need to complete an additional subject via single subject study (Community Access Program). You can book an appointment with the course planning team at Stop 1 to discuss your options.
