Scholarship FAQ
General FAQ
-
A wide range of scholarships and prizes are available through the University of Melbourne. Thanks to the supporters and donors of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) there are a number of scholarships and awards available through FEIT to support aspiring engineers and IT professionals at all stages of their academic journey. These include merit-based scholarships, equity and access support, travel grants, awards for academic excellence, and funding for research and industry engagement. There are opportunities for undergraduates, graduate coursework students as well as Graduate Researchers and opportunities that are open to domestic, international as well as both. Be sure to review the specific eligibility criteria for each scholarship before applying.
-
There are a number of scholarships which you may be automatically considered for, however, the majority of scholarships administered by the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology require students to submit an application. The eligibility criteria, selection criteria and application process for each scholarship is listed in the relevant scholarship page. If the scholarship or award is one that does not require an application, that will be mentioned on the relevant scholarship page.
-
Each scholarship or award has specific eligibility criteria. So, it is important that you read this information carefully and determine whether you meet the criteria listed. You will not be considered if you do not meet the criteria.
Our scholarship rounds are open at different times of the year. The majority of our coursework scholarships are open in two rounds per semester and the majority of our Graduate Research Scholarships are open in two rounds throughout the year. Outside of these rounds we have a few other awards and grants that are available.
-
Only scholarship applications that are submitted by the application deadline will be considered, extensions are not permitted. When you are preparing your application, it is important you note when applications will close and submit prior to the deadline. If you have any questions about the scholarship or application process, ensure to contact the FEIT Scholarships and Prizes team well before the deadline to allow you sufficient time to complete your application.
-
Applying for a scholarship is a competitive process in which you will be applying against other students. After eligibility checks are completed, the selection panel will review the application against the selection criteria. In some cases, applications will be shortlisted and shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview. If an interview is required, this will be noted on the individual scholarship page.
-
It is important to note that some awards have restrictions on whether multiple awards can be held. This will be stated in the Terms and Conditions of the scholarship you already hold as well as the one you are applying for.
-
Whilst there are multiple scholarships that you may be eligible for, scholarships are competitive, so applying with the same application for multiple scholarships may disadvantage you. We would recommend that you look at the purpose of each scholarship so that your application aligns with the purpose of the scholarship as well.
We do not prohibit current and previous recipients from reapplying.
-
You will be notified of the result of your application via SmartyGrants once a decision has been made within 6-8 weeks of applications closing. The application timeframe will also be stated on the scholarships page when applying. If there is a delay in the outcome for a particular scholarship or a scholarship round, applicants will be notified.
Due to application volume, detailed individual feedback may not always be available.
-
You will need to submit an award acceptance form through SmartyGrants. This form includes section to provide a thank you note to the donor of your scholarship or award. Everything you need to know about accepting an award, prize or scholarship, including terms and conditions of your scholarship or award will be explained in your award letter and an email sent via SmartyGrants. If there are any additional requirements, these will be detailed in your award letter.
-
You may update your application in SmartyGrants up until the application closing date. Once the round has closed, applications cannot be reopened or amended. This includes submitting new achievements or updates (e.g. publications, awards, or conference acceptances). All applications are assessed based on the information provided at the time of submission.

Further information
-
The University of Melbourne has a number of Student Bursaries for which students can apply. These are open in different rounds throughout the year. You will need to ensure you have completed a Student Financial Assessment form to be considered for one of the Student Bursaries.
The University also has financial assistance options for current enrolled students, including Student Loans.
-
The FEIT Financial Assessment form is used to help determine financial need for certain scholarships offered by the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology. Please note that this is different to the Student Financial Assessment form used by the wider University to determine financial hardship for University administered bursaries, such as the Student Bursaries.
You will only need to complete this form if it's specifically mentioned in the selection criteria on the scholarship webpage and in the application form. Be sure to read the requirements carefully to check if it applies to you.
