The Gary Nairn Medal for Leadership
The University of Melbourne Centre for Spatial Data Infrastructures and Land Administration (CSDILA) has launched a new leadership award, the Gary Nairn Medal for Leadership named in recognition of the Honorable Gary Nairn AO (1951-2024).

A State Memorial was held on 22 November at Mulloon Institute’s Home Farm in Bungendore, New South Wales, to celebrate the life of the Honorable Gary Nairn. Speaking at the memorial, CSDILA Director Prof Abbas Rajabifard spoke of Gary’s visionary leadership, their friendship and his significant contribution to public life. Gary was remembered as an esteemed colleague and resolute supporter of education, research and the geospatial profession. He held several senior industry leadership roles including as a member and Chairman of CSDILA’s International Industry Advisory Group for over a decade.
The University of Melbourne struck a special version of the leadership medal and Prof Rajabifard presented this to Gary’s family at the State Memorial, as a symbol of our deep gratitude and respect.
The Gary Nairn Leadership Medal will be awarded annually by the University of Melbourne to recognise an individual who has demonstrated leadership and excellence in the service of the geospatial industry. This initiative we trust will go some way to recognise the significant achievements and contributions of our beloved friend and colleague the Honorable Gary Nairn AO.
