Horticultural economic modelling tool

This project produced a decision support tool that captures insights and information about commodity specific performance in the face of projected climate change. It allows users to dynamically test various scenarios investigating economic constraints and value-chain productivity and profitability.

Largely based on gross-margin analysis, the tool’s functionality allows users to explore their own economic futures possibilities and compare these to an average baseline and a centrally projected 2050 case.

Users can adjust key inputs of price, yield, water costs and fertiliser costs or, alternatively, make blanket percentage changes (increase or decrease) to represent whole of system changes to all operations. The tool then generates outputs as to what ramifications these changes will have on break even yield.

The tool serves as a decision-making and knowledge sharing mechanism to support on-farm and regional adaptation into the future, providing a repository of information in a freely accessible, easy to use online format.
