FEIT Small-Class Teacher Induction

The Small-Class Teacher Induction prepares new FEIT staff to undertake the important role of  teaching in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.

This full day training is run at the beginning of every semester for new teaching staff and is the first and largest part of the compulsory Induction program. New staff also need to complete the Inclusive Classes workshop.

Who should attend this induction?

The induction is for new, casual:

  • Tutors
  • Graduate Researcher Academic Associates (GRAAs)
  • Demonstrators
  • Markers
  • Teaching Assistants (TAs)
  • Head Tutors

If you are a casual staff member in FEIT who will be teaching students in the upcoming semester and have not previously completed this Induction, then you need to attend.

Dates:

Thursday 23rd July, 9.30am - 4.30pm

OR

Friday 24th July, 9.30am - 4.30pm

Program:

  • 9.30am - START
  • 12.30pm - 1.15pm - LUNCH BREAK
  • 4.30pm - END

There will be additional short breaks. Morning tea, afternoon tea and lunch are all provided at the venue for attendees.

  • Your own additional snacks if needed
  • Your phone (to complete the attendance form)

Laptops or tablets will not be needed. Pens, notepads and worksheets will be provided.

What to expect:

The Induction will cover important information about your role and responsibility as a small class teacher in the Faculty of Engineering and IT. We will discuss good teaching practice, methods and approaches to classroom management. We will also cover the various services and resources available to you and your students. Participants will engage in a lot of group discussion and activities throughout the day.

Do not plan to do other work or leave for meetings during this training. Attendees are required to attend the entire session.

This Induction is run by the FEIT Teaching and Learning Laboratory. Your main presenter is Dr Josh Burridge.

How to claim payment:

The Small Class Teaching Induction is a paid activity for casual staff. Instructions on how to claim payment for this and your other work (eg. teaching, marking) will be included in the program.

The total paid hours for this Induction is 6.25 hours split into two sessions: 9.30am - 12.30pm (3hrs) and 1.15pm - 4.30pm (3.25hrs).

The payment rate is A.2 for casual staff. Those with a completed PhD are paid at A.6 rate (the PhD must be properly recorded in the University's HR system).

If you can't register for any reason, then please just come along and we can register you on the day.

What's next after this?

The second compulsory part of the Induction is the Inclusive Classes Workshop. These are 2.5 hour workshops that will take place on the 28th and 29th of July. Registration will be available via TrainMe.
