The 2026 call for proposals will open after the University Learning and Teaching Innovation grant outcomes are announced
Academic staff in the Faculty of Engineering and IT are invited to submit proposals to receive a FEIT Strategic Education Innovation Grant in 2025. These grants are offered to academics who teach in the Faculty for innovative projects to improve FEIT subjects in directions aligned with the FEIT 2035 (internal link) and Advancing Students and Education strategies. Along with directly improving the student experience in related subjects, these grants are intended to promote scholarly practice, capability development, and leadership in education in the Faculty.

Grant activity period
Funding
- Up to 3 grants of up to $10,000 are available in 2025 round.
- Funding is not provided where an existing funding scheme exists. This includes:
- Teaching equipment
- Conference travel
- Business-as-usual teaching activity (including planning, assessment refreshing, etc.)
- Awarded LTI Grants (revised LTI projects which were not awarded are eligible to apply)
- Funding cannot be directed towards teaching allocation buy-out
Eligibility
- Applications are invited from FEIT academics employed on a continuing basis, or fixed term through end 2027, with an education allocation in the Faculty of at least 0.4
- Applications must include the endorsement of the relevant department or school deputy head academic
- The scope for these grants includes undergraduate and postgraduate coursework subjects taught within the Faculty of Engineering and IT
- A minimum of one subject coordinator for one targeted subject must be part of the project team
- Any proposal involving learning technologies or video must engage with Teaching & Learning Innovation (formally Learning Environments) prior to submission - vebica.evans@unimelb.edu.au
- Any proposal involving generative AI must include the appropriate level of approval prior to submission, and prior engagement with Business Services is required for any project proposing changes or new features in Spark AI
Selection Criteria
- Alignment of the project impact to Faculty and University strategic goals
- Breadth and depth of impact to FEIT students
- Feasibility of the proposed project
- Quality of proposed evaluation & dissemination
- Project team's capacity to contribute to FEIT education quality after project completion
- Priority will be given to applicants with a demonstrated engagement in teaching and learning quality and improvement, including Scholarship of Teaching & Learning, engagement with teaching professional development, and engagement with Faculty pilot projects.
Selection will be conducted by a committee comprising:
- FEIT Deputy Dean (Academic)
- Director of the FEIT Teaching & Learning Laboratory
- A further member of the FEIT Teaching & Learning Leadership
Project Obligations
Project teams for awarded projects agree to the following requirements:
- A 6-month progress report (1 page)
- An end-of-project report including budget acquittal
- Delivery of a seminar or workshop to the Faculty disseminating project outcomes and learnings
General Guidance
- These grants are not intended for research or initial explorations. Techniques or technologies that have already been tested in the literature or have been successful elsewhere being applied to our Faculty context are required.
- Support is available for learning technologies from Teaching and Learning Innovation (formally Learning Environments) - vebica.evans@unimelb.edu.au
- Support is available for evaluation and dissemination through the IDEAS Scholarship of Teaching and Learning group
- Support for Spark AI is available from Business Services, and for genAI more broadly through the genAI Community of Practice
