Semester 1 2025 has seen the expansion of the FEIT Integrated Learning Pilot, moving into EDS 1 in Old Engineering (pictured).

This is a multipurpose pilot developing capability and a unique UniMelb FEIT flavour of teaching, integrating content delivery and active learning. To take advantage of new pedagogy and leverage our expanding cohort of education specialists, we are working in partnership with the Associate Dean (Teaching Infrastructure), FEIT Infrastructure Team, the participating subject coordinators, and their teaching teams.

We checked in this week to see what the coordinators saw as the potential of these new spaces:

What do you see these new teaching and learning spaces enabling?
Active teaching and learning where we can apply immediately in class what we have learned. It is also really good for teamwork, and flexible in how to use it. One can arrange it for a discussion with people in a large circle, separate students into teams during tasks, or gather all around a common whiteboard or other activity, depending what best suits teaching any one specific thing. I like to mix it up!
Professor Katja Haltta-Otto, Mechanical Engineering

What are your thoughts on integrating lecture material and tutorial/workshop material?
It is relatively easy for a class with well-developed lectures and tutorial examples. Engineering will always involve content delivery, and there is no reason that it should be constrained to solid blocks of 1-2 hours. Flexibility to quickly shift from content delivery to a flat-floor break-out activity and back actually seems to increase attentiveness and intellectual engagement of the students.
Dr Paul Beuchat, Electrical and Electronic Engineering

What benefits do you see this type of space and type of teaching having for the student experience?
A stronger sense of community – I hope they feel more connected with the teaching team and with each other, more prompt two-way feedback on their learning.
Dr Elisa Lumantarna, Infrastructure Engineering

The FEIT Integrated Learning Pilot is currently operating in Old Metallurgy and Old Engineering. Interest in engaging with the pilot has been intense and space is strictly limited – however if you are interested in converting your existing subject and would like to join the waitlist, please connect via your Deputy Head (Education).
