Getting good images
There are three core principles when it comes to obtaining good images in AFM:
- Choose the right probe. It will save a lot of time.
- Run a consistent probe calibration. It will help understanding the motion of the probe relative to the sample’s feature size and it will inform on the amount of force applied to the sample.
- Aim for trace/retrace overlap by adjusting scan rate, set-point value/drive amplitude, pixel density. Depending on the type of sample/probe and whether you work in air or fluid, choose carefully if you operate in repulsive or attractive mode (for AC mode imaging).
